ABSTRACT

The present paper does an appraisal of the monthly Last Saturday Environmental Sanitation in Anambra Sate. Established in the year 1985, the scheme has as its raison d’être the maintenance of clean environment for good health. A hermeneutical analysis of the concept of sanitation shows that there is vital link between health and sanitation, thus echoing the importance of sanitation as far as healthy living is concerned. Though the scheme might have served to maintain clean environment, the success is quite miniscule. Not only that the framework is weak but also the scheme is riddled with many deficiencies such that it cannot sufficiently address the sanitary problems of the state especially where public health is concerned. It is the opinion of the paper that the scheme be restricted to private realm and more virile measures adopted to tackle the sanitation problems bedeviling the state.
